1. Prevent and Reduce Sun Damage

This doesn’t mean you can’t go outside ever. Instead, it means keeping the sun from directly harming your skin.

Sunscreen is your best friend if you have to be outside — apply liberally and often. Use SPF 15 as a minimum and apply more frequently if you’re sweating or swimming. Try to avoid chemical sunscreens and instead stick to ones based on Zinc, as they aren’t absorbed into your bloodstream.

Additionally, you can avoid being out in the sun when it’s at its strongest, usually between 11 am and 3 pm. Wearing long sleeves and long pants, hats, or special sun-blocking clothing is an alternative to sunscreen for those who dislike the additional chemicals.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

We say it three times because it’s that important to hydrate appropriately. First, hydrate from the inside out — start by drinking an appropriate amount of water for your weight. Some scientists have called into question the eight glasses of water a day and suggest that your water needs are actually based on weight.

Take your weight in pounds and multiply it by 0.65, and that’s the base amount of water you should consume in ounces.

So if you weigh 170lbs, you would need to drink 110.5 ounces or 3.2 liters of water. If that seems like a lot, don’t worry — you can count any non-caffeinated beverage toward that total. That decaf mocha latte with extra foam you love after the gym? Count that toward your water!

3. Treat Your Skin Gently
