CBD oil is legal in several states of the US but with differing degrees. CBD can be derived from either marijuana or hemp. Hemp-derived CBD is legal federally however marijuana-derived CBD varies from state to state.

These are different states in the US that allow the purchase of CBD oil for medical and recreational purposes if you meet the age requirement.

In other parts of the US, CBD oil is only legal for medical purposes. Below are the 14 states where only CBD Oil is legal under certain conditions:

Alabama: An individual in Alabama can only access CBD oil through a sponsored clinical trial or has a medical condition that is debilitating and is currently undergoing treatment. Also known as Leni’s Law, patients with a seizure disorder or has debilitating medical condition are allowed the usage of CBD oil.

• Georgia: In Georgia, CBD oil can be prescribed to individuals or patients who have medical conditions such as cancer, Parkinson’s diseases, seizure disorders, and more. The legal limit of CBD oil usage is 20 ounces and is required to be less than 5% THC.
• Indiana: In Indiana, a law to manufacture, sell, possess, and usage of CBD oil with no more than 0.3% THC has been passed earlier in 2018. The legality of CBD will no longer require individuals to be registered as a patient to acquire CBD oil.
• Iowa: Patients suffering from severe medical conditions such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, seizures, and several other debilitating medical conditions are allowed limited usage of CBD oil. Several dispensaries in Iowa have manufactured CBD oil in creams or capsules for easy usage.
• Kansas: In 2018, Kansas has passed a law that allows adults to purchase and possess CBD products legally however, they must contain 0% THC.
• Kentucky: Recently, Kentucky has passed laws that allow cultivation of hemp which is sponsored by the state itself to develop CBD oil.
• Mississippi: Patients with severe epilepsy can use CBD oil high in CBD content but low in THC. The legal cannabis extract must not be more than 15% CBD and no more than 0.5% THC. Usage must be done under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner or physician
• North Carolina: In this state, only patients who have developed intractable epilepsy are allowed the usage of CBD oil only from hemp extract.
• South Carolina: Only individuals suffering from severe epilepsy disorder such as Drave Syndrome can use CBD oil.
• Tennessee: CBD oil derived from hemp extract is legal in Tennessee and can be prescribed to patients with intractable epilepsy with amounts no more than 9/10 of 1% of THC. 
• Texas: In 2015, Texas passed a law that allows only patients with intractable epilepsy to use CBD oil. The extracted amount must not be over 10% CBD and trace amount no more than 0.5% THC.
• Virginia: Recently, Governor Ralph Northam legalized the usage of CBD oil for any medical condition that is diagnosed by a doctor or a medical practitioner.
• Wisconsin: In 2014, CBD has been a legal treatment for a seizure disorder in Wisconsin, however in 2017, the state legalized the usage of CBD as a treatment for any medical condition that is diagnosed by a doctor.
• Wyoming: The usage of CBD is only legal for patients with epilepsy who do not respond well with other treatments. A statement must be issued by Neurologists to allow such patients to use CBD oil and the benefits of them using it from hemp extract. A card will be issued to these patients as prove to obtain CBD oil with high concentrations of CBD and THC.
